Be Bright-Eyed with Essential Oils for Under-Eye Refreshers | N8 Essentials
My best Halloween look seems to be in the morning, unfortunately. Sometimes I wake up puffy-eyed from a night’s rest, making me appear as if I’ve escaped from Hogwarts for the first few hours of the day. As I age it gets worse. I’m not alone – mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes is common as you get older. It is a purely cosmetic concern … in time, the tissues around your eyes weaken. The fat that helps support the eyes moves into the lower eyelids, causing the lids to appear puffy. Fluid also may accumulate in the space below your eyes, adding to the swelling.
But there could be other reasons for those bags under your eyes. They can also be caused by allergies, fluid retention, eye infection, irritation or other causes. For some people, under-eye puffiness can appear just before the onset of their period, with hormonal changes causing the change. Whatever the reason, you can ease the appearance of bags under your eyes using essential oils. Here are a few techniques to try:
- Cold water infusions. Add a drop or two of certified organic rose essential oils to a cup of icy cold water. Seal the container and shake to combine. Spritz your face with cold infusion to help the circulation under your skin and get rid of the bags.
- Spoon trick. Chill a heavy metal spoon in the refrigerator for 5-10 minutes. Coat the back of the spoon with a dilution of certified organic cypress essential oil and your favorite carrier oil. Gently place the cold spoon under your eyes, being careful not to get the essential oil in your eye. The sustained cold and essential oil will shrink blood vessels causing puffiness and soothe the skin.
- Tea bags. Applying tea bags can be an at-home remedy for under-eye puffiness. Brew a hot mug of green or black tea. Remove the teabag and add one drop of certified organic rosemary essential oil. Place the soaked and cooled tea bags under each eye, letting it rest for five minutes. Feel free to sip the tea as you rest, as tea can rehydrate and balance your system, which is good for your skin.
- Cool Blending. Create a cool and mild dilution of certified organic peppermint essential oil and your favorite carrier oil, and apply a stripe under your eyes (being careful not to get the blend too close or in your eye, and making sure the blend is not too strong as to irritate). The mentholated coolness of the natural peppermint can ease feelings of puffiness and soreness.
