My best Halloween look seems to be in the morning, unfortunately. Sometimes I wake up puffy-eyed from a night’s rest, making me appear as if I’ve escaped from Hogwarts for the first few hours of the day. As I age it gets worse. I’m not alone – mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes is common as you get older. It is a purely cosmetic concern … in time, the tissues around your eyes weaken. The fat that helps support the eyes moves into the lower eyelids, causing the lids to appear puffy. Fluid also may accumulate in the space below your eyes, adding to the swelling.
But there could be other reasons for those bags under your eyes. They can also be caused by allergies, fluid retention, eye infection, irritation or other causes. For some people, under-eye puffiness can appear just before the onset of their period, with hormonal changes causing the change. Whatever the reason, you can ease the appearance of bags under your eyes using essential oils. Here are a few techniques to try:

But then I learned about sugar scrub bars. Sugar scrub bars are an incredibly easy and healthy way to get access to essential oil exfoliation on a daily basis. They are a (basically) effortless way to keep my skin smooth and looking healthy and young. Using them gives you beneficial exposure to your favorite essential oils and helps to work their healthy constituents past the first layer of dead skin cells for better absorption.
You can buy sugar scrub bars … but why would you? They are easy and inexpensive to make, and when you create them yourself, you have control over the ingredients and essential oils that you add to the mix. In the spirit of the season, I made my last batch with certified organic peppermint essential oil. But you can use any combination of
essential oils that benefit the skin and smell nice (or not).
To make them, melt ½ cup melt-and-pour soap (available online or from craft-supply stores) in a double boiler or covered in a microwave on 15-second intervals. Mix in ¼ cup coconut oil until combined and add 4 drops of certified organic peppermint essential oil (or essential oil of your choice). At this point, you can add a natural food coloring if you want the soap to have a nice color, or leave it natural, which some people prefer. Combine 1 cup sugar to the mix until you have a thick consistency. Pour into a silicone mold, or even a heat-resistant ice cube tray and let cool for two hours. It’s that easy to get everyday exfoliation backed up by the power of essential oils.
