Tea Tree essential oil

Whether you consider yourself an uber-low maintenance person, or if you tend to dive diva-deep into your skin care routine, paying attention to your skin protects it from the harsh effects of environmental stress and health problems, and keeps you looking and feeling your best. Dry skin is an uncomfortable condition that is sometimes accompanied by scaling, itching or cracking. If left untreated, dry skin can get worse—so taking steps to address the problem sooner than later helps you to feel comfortable and reduces the risk of ongoing problems.

Dryness of the skin occurs for a variety of reasons—you might have naturally dry skin, or have occasional contact dermatitis (which is when your skin reacts to something it touches). Older skin tends to be more dry and cold weather can exacerbate an irritation. No matter the cause, the key to resilient skin is understanding what kind of support your particular skin type needs to overcome the problem.

Choosing a Cleanser

It’s important to use a gentle cleanser to keep your body and face free from dirt and bacteria. Use one that works for your skin type – not just whatever bar or body wash you happen to have in the cupboard. For dry skin, choose a mild liquid soap, one without alcohol or added chemical fragrance. Add a drop or two of organic Lavender essential oil to tone and repair the effects of daily environmental exposure. For mixed skin types, or a complexion that is only occasionally dry, add a drop of geranium essential oil. Wash your face gently, taking care not to scrub too hard to avoid irritation and stress. Don’t use hot water to rinse – just warm. If your splash is too hot, it removes the natural oils your skin needs to stay comfortable.

Moisturizing

A good quality moisturizing lotion should be used every time you wash. Similar to cleansers, it’s important to fine-tune the moisturizer to your skin type. Oily skin can benefit from a natural, common carrier oil, such as rosehip, to dilute essential oils like frankincense and add benefits for long-term skin health. Skin that borders on dry could benefit from a lighter lotion base with a few drops of certified organic tea tree and lavender essential oils (or both). Moisturizing prevents your skin from drying out and leaves it hydrated and smooth. Your lotion will work best if you apply it to skin that is slightly damp, just after washing.

Setting the Tone

A toner is usually applied after washing at the end of the day and can be effective for smoothing, softening, and calming irritated skin. Commercial toners often contain ingredients that aggravate sensitive skin types—but you can easily create your own natural toner customized with your favorite essential oils. Essential oils in skincare can replenish and restore nutrients to your skin and can diminish the appearance of redness and dryness.

If you happen to be one of the millions of Americans who suffer from allergies, you know the discomfort of a sneeze-filled day. Allergies are – quite literally – a headache. Seasonal allergies peak when molds release spores, and grasses, trees and weeds release pollen. But you aren’t safe indoors either. Allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, mold and cockroach droppings all trigger allergic reactions

There is no shortage of chemical remedies … it’s a billion-dollar industry! But, the side effects of medications can be problematic. Using essential oils is a more natural way to ease the allergy burden—or to augment your over-the-counter support. Some of the most commonly used essential oils for relieving allergy symptoms include certified organic Lavender, Lemon, Tea Tree and Peppermint.

Calming, clean-scented Lavender is cleansing and calming. In addition to helping you maintain healthy breathing and strong airways, Lavender’s sweet scent promotes relaxation and aids in reducing headaches. For a topical remedy, massage a few drops of diluted Lavender oil under your nose and apply directly to the skin every two hours during problem episodes, or diffuse for nighttime relief.

The fresh scent of Lemon essential oil is cleansing and anti-inflammatory. It can be beneficial for people who feel allergies most in their head. This gentle citrus oil is both focusing and uplifting – a great combination for those struggling with exhaustion and mental fatigue. Plus, one of the best ways to minimize indoor allergens is by getting rid of dust mites – the most common trigger of allergy symptoms inside the home. Use a damp cloth with a few drops of full-strength Lemon to clean surfaces. Place several drops of Lemon essential oil into your vacuum cleaner bag so that the motor can diffuse it as you move through your rooms.

Many harsh chemicals found in household cleaners have adverse effects and can aggravate symptoms in people who have allergies. If you are sensitive, use environmentally friendly cleaning products made with natural ingredients. Add 20 drops of certified organic Tea Tree oil and a tablespoon of white vinegar to one cup of water. The mixture can then be used to spray areas prone to mold, and across mattresses and other textiles to kill dust mites.

Peppermint oil can help support the airways and relieve headaches. This sweet mentholated scent aids allergy sufferers with feelings of easy breathing. Experiment with different amounts of Peppermint oil to find what works best for you and your family. On a side note, these powerful essential oils are also a serendipitous combination. Try one or two drops of each blended together in your diffuser to get your body through your next allergy attack with natural relief and a soothing effect.

Essential oils have been used for health and healing for more than 6,000 years. Dating back as far as 4500BC, ancient Egypt, Greece, Persia, and other regions were renowned for their aromatic oils. Today, essential oils are commonly used in therapeutic baths, aromatherapy, topical lotions, and various health remedies. Essential oils are concentrated oils derived from the distillation of leaves, flowers, stems, bark and the roots of plants.

The majority of essential oils are clear in color but some have an amber tone such as lemongrass, patchouli, and orange. Likewise, the colors of some oils are light green, yellow and even dark blue. For the most part, essential oils are used externally as in aromatherapy or topically. However, some oils can be taken orally with specialized instructions.

Some of the Benefits of Essential Oils:

Balancing moods, boosting energy levels, helping with sleep problems, relieving pain, nausea and stress, even easing certain skin issues like eczema and dry skin. In truth, the benefits of essential oils are wide-ranging in part because they contain many medicinal properties. Aromatherapy alone can be effective in treating psychological, physical and aesthetic conditions like acne and aging skin. Several essential oils have been shown to have antifungal and antiseptic properties that can be used for cuts, as a disinfectant and for other skin conditions. Additionally, some oils have been known to ease pain and reduce inflammation.

Always Keep These Essential Oils Onhand

Of the many essential oils available, you’ll want to keep these in your medicine cabinet.

Amazing Aroma

One of the best ways to enjoy essential oils is by diffusing them with a diffuser. This type of aromatherapy has a wide variety of health benefits when used properly. Some of the most effective aromatic scents to diffuse include:

Nevertheless, there are certain elements to look for and some very important features to consider before selecting a product.

Quality

Check for purity and quality. Although there is no standard definition for “pure”, the quality of the oil pertains to many factors. Look for a company that has high standards and uses certified organic oils. The making of the oil will often be monitored from start to finish, for example.

Whether you are a diamond diva or a low-maintenance mama, investing in the health of your skin with regular care not only protects this important part of your body from the harsh effects of the environment but keeps you looking and feeling your best. The key to resilient skin is understanding what your skin needs and treating it well.

The easiest way to approach a daily skin regime is to think of it like this – in the morning skincare should focus on prevention and protection for the day. Your routine at night should be centered around cleansing and repair.

You really only need to cleanse your skin once in a day – unless you work something like construction or are raising a toddler, and then all bets are off. For the rest of you, just rinse your face with warm water in the morning before applying moisturizer and sunscreen. At night, after a full day of wind and dirt, more dedicated care is required. Wash your face with a cleanser to remove dirt, excess oils and makeup. If you choose, you can then use a toner, an exfoliant, and serums. Always end with a good, mild moisturizing lotion containing the essential oils that work best for your skin.

When refining your routine for your skin, consider the following:
